Rajagopalachari: A Life of Service to Nation and Humanity

C.R. Rajagopalachari, affectionately known as Rajaji, was a man of many hats - statesman, writer, lawyer, and independence activist. Born on December 10, 1878, in Thorapalli village, Hosur taluk, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, he went on to make an indelible mark on Indian history.

Rajagopalachari's entry into politics was marked by his membership and later chairmanship of the Salem municipality. He then began legal practice at the Salem court in the 1900s. His educational background included stints at Central College, Bangalore, and Presidency College, Madras. The nickname 'Mango of Salem' stuck with him throughout his lifetime.

A vocal advocate for world peace and disarmament, Rajagopalachari vehemently opposed the use of nuclear weapons. He founded the Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. His illustrious career spanned numerous positions, including leader of the Indian National Congress, Premier of the Madras Presidency, Governor of West Bengal, Minister for Home Affairs of the Indian Union, and Chief Minister of Madras state.

Rajagopalachari holds a unique distinction - he was the only Indian-born Governor-General. Prior to him, all holders of the post were British nationals. He served as Governor-General of India until 1950, when India became a republic and the office was abolished. After that, he held the position of Minister without portfolio in the Republic of India.

Throughout his life, Rajagopalachari remained committed to serving the nation and humanity.
