The Kin Lesions Associated with Mallpox EMT: A Study on Histological Findings and Diagnostic Techniques

Monkeypox (mpox), a previously rare viral zoonosis, has garnered significant attention worldwide since the large-scale outbreak began in May 2022. The disease presents with skin lesions that undergo distinct stages of development, including macular, papular, pustular, early ulceration, and late ulceration. To better understand the histological features associated with mpox, our study analyzed five biopsies from four patients at various stages of lesion progression.

Our analysis revealed that the histological findings of mpox are highly dependent on the stage of the biopsied lesion. In the ulcerative stages, we observed occlusive vasculopathic changes, which could be a plausible explanation for the severe pain experienced by some patients with mpox lesions. In contrast, early macular-stage lesions demonstrated subtle viropathic changes and did not express Orthopoxvirus proteins in immunohistochemistry, making them susceptible to being overlooked histologically.

To differentiate mpox from other potential diagnoses such as herpes virus infections, we employed immunohistochemistry with anti-Vaccinia virus antibodies. This technique proved effective in distinguishing between the two conditions. Electron-microscopic examination also provided valuable insights into the morphological characteristics of the lesions.

The results of our study highlight the importance of considering the stage of lesion development when evaluating histological findings in mpox patients. Our findings suggest that immunohistochemistry with anti-Vaccinia virus antibodies can be a useful diagnostic tool, particularly in later stages of the disease. Furthermore, electron-microscopic examination may provide additional information to aid in diagnosis.

In conclusion, our study sheds light on the kin lesions associated with mallpox EMT and emphasizes the need for careful consideration of lesion stage when interpreting histological findings. The use of immunohistochemistry with anti-Vaccinia virus antibodies and electron-microscopic examination can facilitate accurate diagnosis and inform treatment strategies for patients with mpox.
